Do you know which NYC drinking fountains are safe?

NYC Lead Results

We're crowdsourcing safe drinking water in New York City's parks and playgrounds.

No level of lead is considered safe. The EPA action level is 15 PPB (parts per billion). Above 400 PPB can cause brain damage from a single drink.

What's the Issue?

In 2017, WNYC reported that 83% of NYC public school buildings had toxic levels of lead in the drinking water - some with levels so high it would be illegal to dump it on the street.
There is currently no reported testing of other public drinking fountains, including those in parks and playgrounds.

How It Works

get testing kit and get results from fountain

Test for Lead

We’ll send you instructions to get a free lead test kit and walk you through the process of getting scientifically accurate samples from a fountain.

upload lab test results

Upload Results

After getting results back from the lab, our mobile-friendly web-form will let you upload the data to our public map.

volunteers to help map lead levels in public fountains

Share Data

Each time someone uploads a test result, it shows everyone where it’s safe to drink. With enough volunteers we can map all the drinking fountains across the city.
